How to Get Paid to Exercise

I’ve been an avid runner for over 20 years now, and I’m usually out hiking, biking, or generally moving somewhere. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of being able to lace up my shoes and head out the door after a long day (or even in the morning if I know it’s going to be crazy). The moment I find my stride, it’s as if my cares and worries evaporate and I’m left with nothing but the sound of my breath and the light thud, thud, thud of my footsteps on the trail or pavement.

Being a bit of a fitness junkie, I love finding ways to reduce my expenditures, whether it’s on gear, races, or even a gym membership. But making money doing what I love to do?? That’s a certifiable pipe dream of mine. Here is one of my new favorite ways to actually make money through exercise and fitness:

Get Paid to Exercise

One of my favorite apps that would have been great back in my gym-going days (I opt for outdoor exercise now in lieu of being in the gym) is GymPact. When you arrive at your gym, check in on your phone and your workout can be uploaded to the GymPact interface. As stated on their website, they can “verify any fitness facility that is separate from your home or office. University gyms count, and so do yoga studios, swimming pools, tennis courts, martial arts studios, rock climbing gyms, outdoor tracks, or any standalone exercise facility.”

How it Works

For each day, you create a “pact” that says what exercise you’ll do. Once you’ve checked in, the app automatically syncs your check in and gives you credit for fulfilling your pact. If you don’t go? You have to literally pay a penalty (you get to set the amount). If you keep your pact? You’ll be paid in cash through the fund collected from those who didn’t keep their pact! Credits are usually between 30 and 40 cents per workout, so if you’re a person who regularly works out, you can make a decent amount of side cash on top of reaping all the healthy benefits of exercising!

What if You Don’t Go to the Gym to Work Out?

If you’re not a gym rat, don’t despair–GymPact has partnered with RunKeeper. By logging your workout with RunKeepers, the databases will cross reference each other and you’ll get the credit for keeping your pact. This is definitely something I’ll be signing up for!
