I hate shopping.
It means leaving the house, dealing with strangers, navigating a store and spending money. And it usually means getting home and realizing I forgot the one thing I went to the store for, so it just never ends.
I’m not exaggerating, I promise. Some people love it, but it’s not for me.
When it comes to razors, sometimes I hate shopping even more than I hate unwanted body hair. You can imagine the results.
I use Dollar Shave Club to eliminate both.
It’s hard not to love this company.
My editor asked me not to come off too infatuated with the product in this piece, because we know you don’t want us shoving these things in your face. But I truly love Dollar Shave Club. I’ve been a customer almost as long as the company’s been around.
The reasons I love DSC are simple:

- It delivers a necessity to my mailbox every month, so I never have to remember to put razors on my shopping list (and I never would). And I don’t have to ask someone to release my razors from that locked plexiglass case at the store — which is a bit much, isn’t it?
- It works. Razors should never not work, but sometimes, somehow, they don’t. Despite their low price, these actually work well.
- DSC gives me what I want, instead of what pays off best for the company. I can choose from a range of subscription options to only pay for what I need, and I can pause and restart the subscription without a ridiculous hassle.
- I can add other grooming products to my subscription box whenever I want to have DSC ship face cleanser, lotions, hair products and even flushable wipes (with a peppermint tingle!).
When I moved among half a dozen cities in about four years, it was easy to update my subscription, so my razors followed me around the country.
When my boyfriend gleefully participated in Movember last year, it was easy to pause his subscription for the month so his growing mustache would have nothing to worry about.
When he — despite my quiet protests — decided to not only stick with the ‘stache but also add the whole beard… it was easy to stop his subscription.
When we moved to Florida, where I could no longer hide behind pants and long sleeves, I was grateful to have a fresh blade every few days without ever thinking about it.
Five blades only cost me $1 a month (plus $2 shipping) — compare that with a razor with two refills from Walgreen’s for almost $15!
The only complaint I can think of is the company hasn’t come up with a way to stop the sink from getting covered in whiskers. But maybe that’s something I need to take up with my boyfriend…
