I’m so excited to introduce our new feature called, “Weird Business Ideas”. Every Friday we will be focusing on a different start-up company that has come up with a truly unique business idea. All of the businesses we feature will have three things in common: easy start-up, low costs, and of course, it has to be truly wacky and weird. For those of you looking to start your own company, I hope this feature will give you some new and creative ideas.
This week I want to introduce you to a company called “Hangover Helpers”. The company is founded and operated by two college students in Boulder, Colorado (Go Buffs!). These guys provide an after-party service for college students who have had a long night of partying and drinking. The Hangover Helpers will bring each roommate a warm burrito and a Gatorade to help with the hangover healing process. They also come armed with cleaning supplies and aim to restore the apartment/house to its pre-party bliss. They take out the trash, do the dishes, and even mop the floor.
The “Hangover Helpers” have become an overnight success and have already gotten enough free press to keep them busy for the rest of their lives. They have been discussed on CBS World News, Regis & Kelly, and they even earned a feature in Forbes magazine. The guys also market themselves around campus with flyers and appearances on the college radio station.
The service is cheap too so there’s no need to scour the internet for cash advance sources. The guys only charge $15 per roommate which makes me seriously consider offering to fly the guys down to Florida after our next party. But despite their low prices, the company says that they are making on average $60 for a half hour of work. Not too bad, especially since their marketing costs are so low.
It might not be the most glamorous work, but these guys have such a great idea that there has already been discussion of franchising. If you are interested in learning more you can visit their website at www.helpinghangovers.com.
If you’ve got a weird business idea that you would like to share and possibly have featured on “The Penny Hoarder”, please email me at email@example.com with the details.
