Dear Abby’s Advice to Aspiring Journalists: Apply for This $5k Scholarship

Dear College Student,

If you’re looking for help paying for college, here’s a scholarship opportunity you might be interested in.

Jeanne Phillips, the writer behind the well-known advice column “Dear Abby” and the daughter of the original Dear Abby, wants to award a $5,000 scholarship to an aspiring writer or journalist.

And because this scholarship is offered by the queen of columnists, this contest is open only to students who write bylined general-interest, editorial or specialized columns that appear in either print or online editions of college publications.

Basically, if you’re a columnist for your college’s newspaper, you could win $5,000 to help pay for your tuition, fees or textbooks.

Win $5,000 in the 2018 Dear Abby College Columnist Scholarship Contest

Here’s how to enter to win $5,000 from the 2018 Dear Abby College Columnist Scholarship Contest and the National Society of Newspaper Columnists Education Foundation.

Amount awarded: $5,000

Number of scholarships awarded: One

To qualify for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be an undergraduate student (seniors included).
  • Write bylined general-interest, editorial or specialized columns for a college publication.

To apply, applicants must:

  • Fill out the entry form located here.
  • Submit copies and links to three bylined columns published between August 15, 2017 and June 15, 2018.

Scholarship deadline: June 29, 2018.
