Ever wonder about the amount of work that goes into a cemetery headstone?

Maybe not -- but the process is actually quite interesting and involves a number of interesting jobs. How do I know? My dad, Don Rath, designs and sells these headstones.

For years, it was normal for my family to have large chunks of granite sitting in front of our house. However, when it came time to explain what my dad did for a living, I had no idea where to start. Not until I started looking for my own career did I actually dig in and uncover the process behind putting a headstone in a cemetery.

The process starts in a quarry and ends in the cemetery, but in between are two crucial steps that make each monument unique: the design and cutting of the stone.

Some people, like Bob Trottier of Buttura and Gherardi Granite Artisans, do both the design and the cutting, which includes sandblasting and stone etching. Others, like my dad, who are more involved in the retail side of the industry, create designs and then outsource the cutting and engraving to companies like Buttura and Gherardi.

How Do You Get Into This Industry?

Both men have high school diplomas and attended college for a little while, but never finished. “I was at the right place at the right time to buy the business,” Rath said. “This is very much an industry of not what you know, but who you know.”

Both Trottier and Rath come from families in the death industry and have worked in cemeteries or with sandblasters all their lives. “For my first job, I believe I was around eight, the washstand guy would pay me in M&M’s for pulling the stencil off the monuments in the summer and after school,” Trottier said. (Note: the design of the headstone is first cut into a stencil before doing any sandblasting. To ‘pull stencil’ is to remove all the pieces of the stencil that will need to be cut.) “Later on I learned how to do shape carving including deep roses, floral carvings, etc.”

“Unfortunately,” Trottier said, “sandblasting is a dying art. Excuse the pun.” New technology is replacing much of the manpower in the industry, and computer skills are a must. The monument industry has begun using high-tech software that cuts the stone with a click of the mouse. A lot of training can be done on the job since there are no degree programs for monument cutters, but basic knowledge of CAD (Computer Aided Design) and Photoshop is key.

What’s the Daily Grind Like?

Everyday tasks for Trottier involve lots of computer time. He designs 2D and 3D stonework in CAD, then uses a program called Computer Numerical Control (CNC) to transform those CAD drawings into numbers, essentially like plots on a graph. The cutting machine uses those numbers to determine where to cut the 3-dimensional object. He also uses PhotoShop to modify and touch up images that families want included on a stone.

When he’s not on the computer, Trottier is busy with hand and laser etching, essentially drawing into stone. For example, the drawings on the monument below is all etching. It’s not as deep as engraving, and can include dimension, shading, and perspective like any artwork done on paper. He also adds images to headstones using porcelain photos; the photo is put onto the porcelain and baked in an oven so it lasts a lifetime.

Meanwhile, Rath’s daily tasks range from sales and design, to installations and monument maintenance. As the co-owner of John H. McGee & Son Inc., a retail monument company, for over thirty years, he also deals with basic administrative tasks and marketing responsibilities.

Looking Beyond the Headstones

This field isn’t just limited to grave markers. Monuments everywhere are designed and cut by the same people who put headstones in cemeteries. Think about the tributes to veterans in public parks and squares, and granite work in buildings across the country.

Rath managed the sandblasting for the entryway to the New York Wine and Culinary Center in the Finger Lakes region of the state. He has created thousands of monuments scattered across cemeteries and parks in the Western New York. His favorite project, though, was helping to design and build a family’s replica of the facade of a temple in Europe.

Trottier did the sandblast carving on the restored portions of the fountain in front of the Plaza Hotel in New York City, at the entrance to Central Park and across the street from FAO Schwarz toy store. He also did much of the design work for the memorial monument for famed guitarist Les Paul, in Waukesha, WI.

Challenges of the Job

Like any job, being a monument designer and cutter involves a certain amount of stress. “I worry about the possibility of destroying an expensive piece of granite,” says Trottier.

Granite is quarried and shipped in large chunks to his company -- it’s like buying in bulk, and then selling the smaller pieces. If you make a mistake on the design or in making any of the cuts, that piece of granite goes to waste, and so does a lot of time and money.

The job is also physically demanding. Installations and monument maintenance take a toll on your body. While I’ve seen monuments put into place using huge cranes and handcarts, I’ve also seen my dad carry a marker across the cemetery with his own two hands. Granite weighs 18 pounds per square foot, so that’s not a light load.

In the end, it’s the final product that makes the job worth it. “I love being able to start with a family who is having a difficult time and create a lasting tribute for them,” says Rath.

I’ve been renting since I graduated college four years ago, and my boyfriend and I are currently looking for a new apartment. We’ve done this before, so we know what questions to ask. How much should I expect to pay in utilities? Is water included? Where’s the closest grocery store? What’s the crime rate?

But is it okay to ask if the price is negotiable? Sure! It may be easier than you think to talk yourself into a lower rent -- even if you’re not moving to a new place.

Consider what you have to offer your landlord in exchange for a break on your monthly rent payment. Here are five ways to trade your skills for discounted rent -- plus a couple of bonus discounts.

1. Bring Your Work Home With You

My boyfriend is working towards becoming a police officer and was just offered a community watch position at an apartment complex -- along with a hefty 20% discount on the monthly rent.

Always be sure to mention your profession to your landlord.

Do you have special skills like bookkeeping? Offer to keep track of your landlords’ finances. It’s a pesky task that they may not enjoy, and they may be happy to give you a discount on rent in exchange for a few hours of your time. Plumbers, electricians and other tradespeople should offer their expertise as well. Why should the landlord outsource this work to other businesses when you live right there?

2. Create Valuable Amenities

Apartment communities are always looking for new, exclusive services to brag about and help land new tenants. Perhaps you could teach a fitness class onsite or offer your time as a babysitter for residents. In pet-friendly communities, offer to walk dogs. You barter your time for a discounted rent and your apartment complex offers hot new amenities that their competitors cannot -- it’s a win-win situation.

3. Become the Resident Farmer

Ask your landlord if there is a piece of the property where you could build a garden, then trade them fresh fruits and vegetables in exchange for reduced rent. To sweeten the deal, offer to do your landlord’s grocery shopping for them and sneak in some of your freshly grown foods.

4. Build Sweat Equity

Getting your hands dirty could net you a solid return on your investment of time and effort. Offer to maintain the yard and landscaping or to keep up with painting the property. When other residents move out, roll up your sleeves and help clean the apartment so it’s ready for the next habitant.

5. Ask About Odd Jobs

Is there a part-time office gig available? Offer to sort mail, vacuum the carpets or even tidy up the fitness room. These odd jobs take just a couple of hours each week and may save you a decent percentage on your monthly rent. Apartment complexes love to hire residents because who knows the property better than you?

Are You Eligible for These Additional Discounts?

Asking about current or upcoming specials can reduce or eliminate your upfront costs. If any of these situations apply to you, check whether your landlord offers reduced rent.

  • Are you or your roommate active or former military? Let your landlord know. Military discounts on rent are common and could save you a bundle.
  • Are you a student or a recent grad? You may qualify to eliminate application costs or up-front deposits, or get discounted rent. Your school’s resource center may be able to help you find student-friendly housing.
  • Are you looking for housing during a slow season? This might be when college is out or during cold-weather months. During these times, your landlord may offer reduced rents or eliminate application fees to entice new tenants.

Never be afraid to ask. Everyone, including your landlord, is looking for a way to save money. Trading your skills or time for reduced rent could help make that monthly payment just a little less painful. (Like this idea? Click to tweet it).
