For bargain shoppers, Walmart is usually a no-brainer.

Convenience and competitive prices make the giant retailer a go-to for almost anything you want to buy.

But even Walmart prices can be cut down — if you’re savvy enough.

Here are 13 ways to find the best Walmart deals every time you shop.

1. Start Kickin’

Retale app

No extreme physical activity resulting in pulled muscles is required for this money-making trick. All you need to do is download the Shopkick app.

Once you sign up, the app pays you in “kicks” for walking into certain stores (including Walmart, Target, TJMaxx and more). These can be redeemed for gift cards to a number of retailers, including Amazon, Target, Walmart, Starbucks, Sephora and Best Buy.

It pays you even more “kicks” for photos of receipts that include qualifying items you purchased in-store with a connected credit or debit card. You can also earn kicks for online purchases. Bonus: You don’t have to do anything; your linked cards will automatically apply your kicks.

We’ve got an ultimate guide to using the app here.

2. Stop Deleting Emails From Walmart

Can’t hold off on that purchase for a big sale? Do the next best thing: Buy it now and get a refund next time the price drops.

Your secret weapon here is an app called Paribus. It scans your emails for receipts, looking for online purchases from participating retailers, including Walmart.

Paribus takes advantage of retailers’ price-match policies to negotiate a refund on your behalf. So you don’t have to do anything — just wait for a notification that you’ve earned cash back.

You’ll get a refund via your original payment method, store credit or a check in the mail.

3. Know Your Markdown Tags

Walmart has a secret system for marking down clearance tags.

You can use this information to find the best Walmart deals!

  • Items with prices ending in $__._7 are the original price.
  • Items with prices ending in $__._5 are the first markdown.
  • Items with prices ending in $__._1 are the final markdown.

So, if you see a “clearance” item with a price ending in 5, and there’s still plenty in stock, you can hold out for a better markdown.

And if you see one ending with 7, you’ll know the item isn’t discounted at all yet.

4. Get Paid to Shop at Walmart

Drop is a financial tech company that rewards you for your purchases.

As a Drop user, all you have to do is link your credit and debit cards. When you make a Drop-qualified purchase, you’ll automatically earn points, whether you’re grocery shopping, hailing an Uber or ordering a pizza. The points will add up, and you can then exchange them for gift cards to popular retailers like Amazon and Starbucks.

It’s the ultimate loyalty card — without the card.

You can sign up right here.

6. Download the Walmart App and Use the Savings Catcher

Savings Catcher
Walmart’s app allows you to make a shopping list, check in-store and online prices and availability, look at the weekly ad and more — saving you time and money in the process.

One of the best and easiest ways to save money with this app is the Savings Catcher.

Simply scan your receipt using the app, or log into your account online and enter the receipt number, and Walmart will do all the work for you.

It’ll compare prices at local retailers, including current advertised sale prices. If it finds a lower price, Walmart will credit you the difference on a gift card.

Even better, you’ll get double the Savings Catcher Reward Dollars when you redeem them to your Bluebird Card.

7. Buy a Loaf of Bread for $1

We’ve been doing this in my house for years!

Head to the bakery to find day-old bread on sale — usually for less than $1.

In some stores, I’ve even seen an impulse rack near the registers, in case you need that final nudge. This is an affordable way to indulge on fresh-baked ciabatta or French breads with an otherwise hefty price tag.

8. Take Advantage of Price Match

Price Match

(Editor’s Note: Walmart has started nixing its price match policy in various markets. Here’s our running list of where it’s reportedly no longer available.)

Walmart’s price match policy applies to competitors and their own online store.

If you find a price for your item at that’s cheaper than in-store, Walmart will give you the lower price in the store.

And if you find a lower competitor price online, they’ll match that price.

9. Save Money on Gas

Dozens of prescriptions
refills for common conditions are available for $4 per 30-day supply.

Depending on your prescription, once you start or transfer it to Walmart, you may even be able to refill your order online and have it delivered to your home.

However, there are actually some other companies out there that deliver your prescriptions right to your door — and can save you money.

Try Phil, an online prescription refill service. You sign up, and Phil contacts your pharmacy, doctor, your insurance company — whomever it needs to — and handles the rest. Each month, you’ll get your prescriptions delivered to your doorstep. You’ll still have to pay for them, but delivery is free.

You can even manage prescriptions for your entire family, including your aging parents.

If you sign up now, you can get $30 off your first prescription.
