13 Secrets Every Walmart Shopper Needs to Know
For bargain shoppers, Walmart is usually a no-brainer.
Convenience and competitive prices make the giant retailer a go-to for almost anything you want to buy.
But even Walmart prices can be cut down — if you’re savvy enough.
Here are 13 ways to find the best Walmart deals every time you shop.
1. Get Cash Back on Your Walmart Purchases
If you haven’t downloaded Ibotta, chances are you’re missing out on a ton of cash-back offers from Walmart. (Nearly 600 offers, actually.)
Ibotta is a cash-back app that allows you to earn money for your everyday purchases. It’s easier than cutting coupons, too.
Just download Ibotta, search for Walmart’s cash-back offers, add them to your rebate list then shop. Once you’re home, take a photo of your receipt and bam: You’ve got cash back.
Here are some of our favorite offers available right now. (These are subject to change, as Ibotta updates its offers about once a week.)
- $5.75 back on Dove Shower Foam
- 25 cents back on anything from the entire store
- $4 back on Venus razor cartridges
- 25 cents back on broccoli and/or avocados (any brand)
- $2 back on Pampers Easy Ups
- $1 back on Tums
- $2 back on Scott Paper Towels
- $2 back on Clorox 2 (a stain remover and color booster)
You can pair these rebates with coupons, too, so the savings possibilities are endless.
If you sign up for Ibotta now, you’ll snag a $10 welcome bonus after you redeem your first rebate.
BONUS: Collect cash for coupon overages. Walmart is one of few remaining retailers that will give you cash if a coupon’s value exceeds the price of an item. Take advantage of deal-stacking with Ibotta to bring prices down.
2. Scan Your Groceries When You Get Home
Did you know that the Nielsen company will pay you to scan the groceries you buy from Walmart each week? Crazy, right?
Once you sign up to become a Nielsen Consumer Panel family, you’ll be asked to simply scan the barcodes on your groceries and send your data off to Nielsen each week. Pretty easy, huh?
If you want to give it a try, you can fill out an application here:
As an active participant, you earn gift points which you can redeem for different types of merchandise. You can choose electronics, jewelry, household items and even toys for the kids. The longer you stay on the panel, the more opportunity you have to earn points towards prizes.
You also receive entries for the panel’s many sweepstakes. Prizes include money, vacations, and brand new vehicles. This is a great way to make your consumer voice count and be rewarded handsomely for recording your purchases. You’re already going to the grocery store anyway, right?
3. Stop Deleting Emails from Walmart
My new secret weapon is called Earny — a tool that gets you money back for your online purchases. It’s free to sign up, and once you do, it’ll scan your email archives for any receipts.
If it discovers you’ve purchased something from Walmart or one of 20+ other online retailers listed on the website, it will track the item’s price and issue you a refund anytime there’s a price drop!
You don’t have to do anything!
4. Know Your Markdown Tags
Walmart has a secret system for marking down clearance tags.
You can use this information to find the best Walmart deals!
- Items with prices ending in $__._7 are the original price.
- Items with prices ending in $__._5 are the first markdown.
- Items with prices ending in $__._1 are the final markdown.
So, if you see a “clearance” item with a price ending in 5, and there’s still plenty in stock, you can hold out for a better markdown.
And if you see one ending with 7, you’ll know the item isn’t discounted at all yet.
5. This Site Will Give You a Free $10 Walmart Gift Card + 10% Cash Back
Have you heard of MyPoints before?
It’s a cash-back site that pays you to print coupons and shop online. We use them all the time — it’s an instant way to save on everything you buy.
Right now they’re offering a pretty sweet deal: Spend $20 at Walmart and they’ll send you a free $10 gift card!
Here’s how it works…
- Sign up for MyPoints here (you just need to give them a name and email address).
- MyPoints will instantly send you an email to confirm your email address. You need to click the link in order to get the free gift card.
- Lastly, you’ll need to purchase $20 worth of products on Walmart.com (you can buy groceries too!). MyPoints will reward you with 1,750 bonus points you can then redeem for a $10 Walmart gift card. Easy peasy.
On top of that, MyPoints is currently offering 10 points per dollar on Walmart purchases, about 10.5% cash back.
6. Compare Walmart’s Prices Using Retale
Yep, Retale. Not retail.
We all know the best way to save is by shopping around. But who has time for that?
Running all over town is time consuming and kind of annoying, which is why we’ve fallen in love with this money-saving app.
Retale helps you build a shopping list each week by showing you the weekly ads from Walmart and all of your local grocery stores (or any store for that matter!). So, you can figure out where to get the best deal on the item(s) you need — before you ever leave the house.
What we like most about it is while you’re browsing the ads, you can click the items you want — and it automatically adds them to a shopping list.
And if you’re someone who likes to stack, Retale even has a tab to discover store coupons to make the deals even better!

7. Download the Walmart App and Use the Savings Catcher
Walmart’s app allows you to make a shopping list, check in-store and online prices and availability, look at the weekly ad and more — saving you time and money in the process.
One of the best and easiest ways to save money with this app is the Savings Catcher.
Simply scan your receipt using the app, or log into your account online and enter the receipt number, and Walmart will do all the work for you.
It’ll compare prices at local retailers, including current advertised sale prices. If it finds a lower price, Walmart will credit you the difference on a gift card.
Even better, you’ll get double the Savings Catcher Reward Dollars when you redeem them to your Bluebird Card.
8. Buy a Loaf of Bread for $1
We’ve been doing this in my house for years!
Head to the bakery to find day-old bread on sale — usually for less than $1.
In some stores, I’ve even seen an impulse rack near the registers, in case you need that final nudge. This is an affordable way to indulge on fresh-baked ciabatta or French breads with an otherwise hefty price tag.
9. Take Advantage of Price Match
Walmart’s price match policy applies to competitors and their own online store.
If you find a price for your item at Walmart.com that’s cheaper than in-store, Walmart will give you the lower price in the store.
And if you find a lower competitor price online, they’ll match that price.
10. Save Money on Gas
Deals on gas at Murphy USA gas stations change throughout the year.
You’ll find special savings when you pay with a Walmart gift card, Walmart credit card or Walmart MasterCard.
Right now, save 3 cents per gallon when you fill up with a Walmart gift card.
11. Get Free Samples
Did you know you can order free samples of Walmart products?
Load up on freebies, and get a chance to try something new before you buy it.
Freebies are often accompanied by Walmart coupons for additional savings when you decide to buy.
12. Get Prescriptions for $4/Month
Dozens of prescriptions refills for common conditions are available for $4 per 30-day supply.
Depending on your prescription, once you start or transfer it to Walmart, you may even be able to refill your order online and have it delivered to your home.
13. Get Free Shipping
When you shop online, use these tips to avoid paying for shipping:
- Ship to the store for free. Items eligible for free store pickup — most are — will be marked on the site.
- Get free shipping on orders of $50 or more.
- Sign up for Shipping Pass. For $50 a year, you can get unlimited three-day shipping on all orders.
