Woman Finds Meteorite Worth $20,000 While Walking the Dog
This is one of those stories that makes me want to get off my butt and take the dog for a walk!
So get this… a stay-at-home mom in the tiny town of Lotus, California recently found a meteorite while walking her dog that could be worth more than $20,000!
The rock is only 17 grams (equal to just over a tablespoon of sugar), but it’s more than 4 billions year old.
Scientists say a small meteor shower rained down on the town a few weeks ago and since then people like Brenda Salveson have been finding rocks all over the place and they are worth some serious cash.
From the CBS report:
“I was lucky, blessed, good karma,” Brenda said. “It was sitting there at my toes like an Easter egg.”
An egg? More like a diamond in the rough. That gem from outer space was found at the Lotus park where Brenda, her kids and her collie come to nearly every day.
“I had jumpy puppy in one hand and rock in another,” she said.
In a separate case, the Los Angeles Times blog reports that a firefighter found a smaller meteorite in the local park while walking to work. He only had to look for a mere 20 minutes and then sold it on the spot to a dealer for $2,000.
That’s incredible, but it begs a couple of questions….
Is meteorite hunting a real thing?
(If people do this for a living, I want to sign up!)
How do you know what to look for?
(As I frantically try to remember where I stored my childhood rock collection…)
And finally, where do you sell meteorites?
(I don’t remember seeing a section at Target for them)
I’ve spent the last couple of weeks doing my homework and tomorrow I’m going to share the answers to all of these questions. I guarantee that you’ll never take a walk again without keeping your eyes peeled. LOL!
tomorrow (next week)….
