ScoreCard Research

Between tuition, textbooks and the unplanned $8 you spent on a campus latte this morning, college is insanely expensive. Anywhere you can shave a few dollars off a monthly bill or score free two-day shipping on essentials is worth looking at — especially when the discount is specifically built for your age bracket.

Amazon recently expanded Amazon Prime student to include 18-to-24-year-olds who aren’t enrolled in school called Prime for Young Adults.

If you’re new to Prime, you also get a longer-than-normal free trial: six months instead of the usual 30 days. That alone is usually enough to justify a look.

Wondering what Prime Young Adult actually costs, how to qualify, whether the free trial is really free and what happens after you graduate? We’ll answer all of these questions and more below.

What Is Amazon Prime Student?

Amazon Prime Student, or Amazon Prime Young Adult, is a half-price Prime membership for college students and 18–24-year-olds that costs $7.49 a month or $69 a year. That’s about 50% less than regular Prime — and it starts with a 6-month free trial. But offers change, so always verify terms.

You get effectively the same core Prime perks — free two-day (often one-day or same-day) shipping, Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Reading, Prime Gaming and exclusive deals.

A few weeks before Amazon thinks you’re no longer eligible (based on the information you gave when you signed up), you’ll get an email saying your membership will automatically convert to a regular Prime membership.

How Much Is Amazon Prime Student?

Amazon Prime Student costs $7.49 per month or $69 per year after the 6-month free trial ends. Regular Amazon Prime, by comparison, runs $14.99 per month or $139 per year.

Annual is the cheaper path if you plan to stick with it — $69 works out to about $5.75 a month, versus $7.49 on the monthly plan. Either option can be canceled at any time.

Is Amazon Prime for Students the Same as Prime for Young Adults?

Yes — Amazon now offers Prime at a discounted rate to anyone 18–24, not just students. Amazon quietly rebranded the discount umbrella to “Prime for Young Adults,” folding Prime Student into a broader program.

Amazon Prime Student Free Trial: How the 6 Months Work

New members get 6 months free before any charges begin. During the trial you have access to shipping perks, Prime Video, Prime Music and other benefits — essentially the full membership.

Amazon does ask for a payment method up front. You won’t be charged during the 6-month trial, but the card is there so your account can roll over into the paid plan automatically if you don’t cancel.

You can cancel the trial at any time before it ends and keep your benefits through the remainder of the 6 months. After that, the standard $7.49/month or $69/year pricing starts unless you’ve canceled or switched your preference.

One caveat worth knowing: the 6-month trial is for new members. If you’ve previously used a Prime Student trial — or in some cases any Prime trial — you may not be eligible again. Amazon’s page will tell you during signup.

Who Qualifies for Amazon Prime Student?

You qualify for Amazon Prime Student if you’re a current college student enrolled at a U.S. college or university, or a trade school that grants an associate’s, bachelor’s or graduate degree. Or if you’re ages 18-24.

Eligibility requirements at a glance:

  • You’re actively enrolled at a U.S. college or university (two-year or four-year).
  • You have a .edu email address — or you can verify your enrollment through SheerID with a student ID.
  • Or you’re 18-24.
  • You plan to use the membership for personal, non-business use.

Amazon may ask you to re-verify enrollment each year. If you graduate, drop below half-time enrollment, age out or fail to re-verify, the account will convert to regular Prime at full price. Graduate students qualify again on their own track.

How to Sign Up for Amazon Prime Student (Step by Step)

Signing up for Amazon Prime Student (Amazon Prime Young Adult) takes about five minutes. Here’s the full walkthrough if you’re a student.

  • Go to amazon.com/joinstudent on your phone or computer.
  • Sign in with your existing Amazon account — or create a new one if you don’t have one. Use the email you want linked to the student discount.
  • Enter your .edu email. Amazon sends a verification link you’ll need to click to confirm it.
  • Confirm your school and expected graduation year. This sets your eligibility window.
  • Add a payment method. You won’t be charged during the 6-month trial, but Amazon needs a card or bank account on file to roll you into the paid plan if you don’t cancel.
  • Start using your free 6 months. You’ll get an email confirmation with your trial end date.

Don’t have a .edu email? You can still sign up by verifying your enrollment through SheerID — Amazon will prompt you to upload a current student ID, transcript or enrollment letter. Processing usually takes a business day or two.

The steps are similar if you’re signing up based on age.

Amazon Prime Student Benefits in 2026

Prime Student gives you the full Prime benefit set at half the price. Specific partner perks may rotate, so always check the current lineup.

Shipping & shopping

Free two-day shipping (often one-day or same-day in major metros) is the core reason most people sign up.

With Prime Day and early-access deals, you get exclusive access to Prime Day and Black Friday previews. It’s best for big-ticket buys like laptops, monitors or dorm supplies.

Streaming & entertainment

Prime Video includes ad-supported streaming at no extra cost, and upgrading to ad-free costs an additional fee.

Prime Music gives you ad-free access to Amazon Music’s Prime tier with thousands of playlists and podcasts. It’s best for background study music. (You can upgrade to Amazon Music Unlimited at a discounted student rate — around $5.99/month, though pricing may vary.)

Prime Gaming offers free games and in-game content each month plus a free Twitch subscription. It’s best for gamers who watch live streams.

Reading & learning

Prime Reading offers a rotating catalog of free ebooks, magazines and Audible originals. It’s best for casual reading between classes.

Food & lifestyle

You also get a Grubhub+ free membership. It has free delivery on eligible orders and exclusive restaurant deals (when the partnership is active).

How to Maximize Your Prime Student Membership

The way to squeeze the most out of Prime Young Adult is to actually use the perks you already paid for. Here are six ways to get your money’s worth.

  • Stack Prime Student with Prime Day and back-to-school sales. The biggest laptop and dorm-gear deals of the year land in July and August — Prime Student members get early access.
  • Use your Prime Reading allotment monthly. Borrow a few ebooks or magazines each month — it’s essentially a free mini-library.
  • Take advantage of rotating partner perks. Check the Prime Student dashboard at the start of each semester.
  • Split-share carefully. Amazon Household lets you share shipping with one other adult — fine for a partner, not permitted for casual friend-sharing.
  • Set a calendar reminder for your trial end date. If you decide Prime isn’t for you, cancel before month six to avoid the first charge.
  • Pair Prime with a cash-back credit card. The Amazon Prime Visa also gives members 5% back on Amazon purchases — a nice stacking layer if you’re already spending on the platform.

What Happens When Your Prime Student Membership Ends?

When you graduate, stop verifying enrollment or turn 25, your membership converts to regular Amazon Prime at full price unless you cancel. Amazon will email you before the switch happens.

If you want to stay on Prime, you don’t have to do anything — the plan just rolls over to $14.99/month or $139/year. If you’d rather not continue, cancel in your account settings under Your Account → Prime Membership → End Membership.

A few common scenarios:

  • Graduating: Your Prime Student rate holds through the end of the term in which you graduate. Then it converts to regular Prime.
  • Going to grad school: You may requalify for another Prime Student stretch if you’re enrolled in an eligible degree program. Verify your grad-school enrollment the same way you did for undergrad.
  • Aging out: Prime for Young Adults ends at 25. Your account converts to standard Prime pricing on renewal.
  • Auto-charged and didn’t want it: Contact Amazon customer service quickly. Amazon often refunds the first regular-Prime charge if you haven’t used Prime benefits that billing cycle.

Prime Student vs. Prime Access (EBT/Medicaid)

If you’re not 18–24 and don’t have a .edu email, Amazon Prime Access gives EBT or Medicaid recipients a discounted rate — historically around $6.99 a month. It’s Amazon’s lowest-price Prime tier and is designed for households receiving qualifying government assistance.

You qualify for Prime Access if you have a valid SNAP, EBT, Medicaid or similar government assistance card. Verification happens right inside the signup flow.

You can only hold one Prime tier at a time, so if you’re eligible for Prime Access and not for Prime Student, Prime Access is the cheapest option. Students who also qualify for EBT/Medicaid should compare both prices and pick whichever is lower at renewal.

Other Ways to Save Money in College

Prime Student is one of the easier wins for a college budget, but it’s far from the only one. A few tools worth pairing it with:

  • Student credit cards. The right starter card can help you build credit for post-grad life and earn cash back on textbooks and takeout.
  • Budgeting apps. Apps like YNAB, Monarch and Rocket Money help you track spending and avoid the end-of-month panic.
  • Cash-back streaming options. Stacking Prime Video with one free student-rate streamer (Hulu, Spotify bundle) keeps the entertainment budget under control.
  • Side gigs that fit around class. Flexible options like tutoring, freelance writing and delivery gigs can cover Prime’s $7.49 many times over in a single shift.
  • Jobs that pay for college. Employers like Starbucks, Target, UPS and Amazon itself offer tuition reimbursement for part-time workers.
  • Free samples and freebies. Legitimately free products shipped to your dorm — good for sampling shampoo, snacks and supplements without the commitment.

Layering a couple of these onto Prime Student often delivers more savings than any one subscription. Small wins compound.

Amazon Prime Student FAQs

Is Amazon Prime Student worth it?

For most college students who order from Amazon more than a few times a year, Prime Student is worth it. At $7.49/month or $69/year, the free shipping alone often covers the cost — and the streaming and rotating partner perks are bonus value. It’s less compelling for students who barely shop online.

Do I need a credit card for the free trial?

Amazon requires a payment method on file — a credit or debit card, or a bank account — to start the 6-month free trial. You won’t be charged during the trial, but Amazon uses the card to roll you into the paid plan if you don’t cancel.

What happens if I graduate early?

Your Prime Student rate holds through the end of the academic term in which you graduate. After that, the account converts to regular Prime at $14.99/month or $139/year unless you cancel or qualify for another discount program.

Can international students get Prime Student?

Yes, if you’re enrolled at a U.S. college or university and have a valid U.S. address. Prime Student is available to international students who meet the enrollment and address requirements; U.S. citizenship isn’t required.

Does Prime Student come with Prime Video?

Yes. Prime Student includes Prime Video as part of the membership, currently with ads. Going ad-free costs an additional fee (around $4.99/month at last check — offers change; verify terms).

How do I cancel Prime Student?

Go to Your Account → Prime Membership → End Membership on Amazon’s website. You can cancel anytime, and if you cancel during the free trial, your benefits continue until the trial period ends with no charge.
