Subway has spent a fortune putting new deli meat slicers in every restaurant, and they’re really proud of their new deli meat sandwiches — so proud that they want you to try one for free.

The sandwich chain is giving away up to 1 million 6-inch subs on July 11, and here’s how to get one:

Go to a participating Subway location between 10 a.m. and noon on Tuesday. If you’re one of the first 50 people to ask at that location, they’ll give you a free sub.

You have to choose one of Subway’s four new sandwiches — Titan Turkey, Garlic Roast Beef, Grand Slam Ham or the one they call “The Beast” (it includes pepperoni, salami, turkey, ham and roast beef, in case you were wondering).

You have to actually go in person and order inside the restaurant — no ordering on the phone or on Subway’s app. Only one free sandwich per customer. No substitutions. You might want to call ahead and see if your local Subway is participating — or just drop by and ask.

What’s the Deal With Subway’s Giveaway?

So, why is Subway giving away free food? They’re doing this to draw attention to their new lineup of deli-style sandwiches. They have a lot riding on these sandwiches.

You see, Subway has been having kind of a tough time, and they’re making some changes in an effort to turn the corner.

“Subway has closed thousands of U.S. locations in recent years due to over-expansion, outdated operations and decor, stale menus and $5 footlong deals that eroded franchisees’ profits,” Reuters recently reported. Not to mention the fact that they’ve been struggling to recover sales after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, as part of a menu overhaul, they’ve invested $80 million in deli meat slicers and have installed them in every Subway in the U.S. They’re freshening up the Subway brand — possibly in preparation for selling the company.

“Over the past two years, we overhauled our expansive pantry of ingredients and debuted a whole new way to Subway with chef-crafted signature sandwiches,” Trevor Haynes, Subway’s president of North American operations, said in a press release.

So what are these four new sandwiches? Subway is calling them Deli Heroes. They all involve a lot of freshly sliced deli meat. They’re all served on “Artisan Italian bread.” They all come with Subway’s usual assortment of toppings and condiments.

And for two hours Tuesday morning — or at least until supplies last — they’re free.
