I’ll admit it – I’m a little obsessed with Target.
I purchased my first set of furniture at Target and I still do my weekly grocery shopping there. And you better believe I can do some damage in “The One Spot!”
But, don’t be fooled by the prices on the shelf. If you know the secrets to Target shopping, you can save up to 25% on every shopping trip!
Here are our favorites…
1. Use the Target Debit Card & Save 5% on Every Purchase
It probably doesn’t surprise you to learn that Target has a branded credit card that offers discounts to customers. I don’t really recommend you signup, because the interest rate is ridiculously high (23% at last check).
However, they also offer a Target debit card that links directly to your checking account. There are no fees with this card and the best part is that Target gives you 5% cashback on every purchase you make at their store (excluding prescriptions). There’s no line of credit and it doesn’t affect your credit history.
If you’re a frequent Target customer this can add up to some serious bucks! According to a national research study, the average family spends $1,024/month on groceries, so if you’re using your Target Red card for all of those purchases, you’d save an extra $614/year! Nice, right?
2. Shop at Target.com & Get 1.4% Cashback
As much as I love walking around the Target discount aisles, I actually recommend you try to limit most of your non-grocery purchases to Target.com. I find the prices to be a bit better, plus if you use sign up for a free account with Mypoints, you’ll earn 1.4% cashback on every Target purchase you make.
Plus, they’ll give you a free $10 Target gift card the first time you make a purchase.
If you’re getting 1.4% cashback on every purchase, plus you use your Target debit card, you’re already save 6.4% on every item. And I’m just getting started….
*Mypoints does not give you cashback on these categories: electronics, beauty, baby, grocery, personal health.
3. Print High Value Coupons Before You Go

4. Know Your Markdown Tags
If you do go into a physical store, you’ll need to know the secrets of the Target markdown tag. Check the upper right corner of those little red tags for the markdown percentage. The lower left corner of the tag will tell you the original price.
Also, prices ending in $0.04 usually indicate that the item has been marked down multiple times and will probably not going any lower. But, those ending in $0.06 or $0.08 have a chance at further markdowns.
5. Download the CartWheel App
Download Target’s CartWheel app on your smartphone so that you can see the latest discounts on everything from clothing to food. This is where the discounts really start to add up, because you can stack these savings with your coupons & RED card cashback.
6. Stack sales w/ Rebates
And finally, make sure you also download the Ibotta & Checkout51 apps. These apps are great because they will give you cash rebates on your Target purchases if you take a picture of your receipts when you get home.
Here’s how it works:
2. Download the mobile apps, click on the “Rebates” section, and then click “Target”.
3. From here, you should see dozens of different rebates you can take advantage of. For example, right now the app is offering me .50 cents if I upload a picture of a receipt showing that I bought milk. And another .75 cents if I upload a receipt that shows I bought bread. Cool, right?
Now, you obviously don’t want to go out and buy a bunch of stuff you don’t need, but I think you’ll find tons of rebates for things you are already buying.
Plus, you can stack all of the other hacks on top of this, which can easily add up to 25% or more in savings on every purchase.
Your Turn: Do you use these Target hacks already? Any that I missed?
