As the owner of more than a dozen financial blogs, I’ve learned quite a bit about personal finance over the last few years. In fact, sometimes I think I’ve learned just about every trick to save and make extra money there is. But, I’ve messed up…
You see, I’ve been reading for years that one of the easiest ways to save money is to negotiate your current bills. The advice goes as follow: “Call your cable, internet, cell phone, and insurance companies and simply ask them to lower your rate.”
And despite reading this advice a million times, I’ve still never done it. In my mind, I justify it because I’ve got the cheapest cell phone plan that AT&T offers and I’ve already shopped around for cheaper car insurance a million times.
But from what I’ve read, most companies have unadvertised rates that they only offer if you ask for them. This is where it get’s tricky…
I’m lazy. It’s kind of a pain to call each company. And let’s face it, most of us suck at negotiating.
So, I’ve decided to hire someone to negotiate on my behalf.
Her name is Katie and she works for a company called BillCutterz.com. They’re basically a bill discount service. All you do is send them a copy of your bills and they call your providers and try to negotiate better rates on your behalf. And you don’t have to give up any services or features either – they just try to get you a better rate for what you’re already paying for.
I was a little skeptical about the service, but I’ve decided to give them a try because here’s how it works: If they don’t save you any money, there’s is no charge – ever.
If they do save you money, you split the savings with them. Meaning, if they save you $100 on your cell phone bill, you get $50 and they get $50.
Pretty cool, huh? You can find out more about their service here.
I’ve already sent my bills to Katie and I should know in a couple of days how much money she saved me. I’ll update you in a couple of days and let you know what happens…
